Breast Reconstruction Using Implants

Saline or silicone implants are another option to restore volume to a breast after mastectomy. However, after surgery there is often not enough tissue and skin and an expander must first be inserted to stretch the skin for it to be able to accommodate an implant. The expander, which is a balloon that is gradually filled with saline solution, can be placed at the time of the mastectomy or in another procedure. After the skin has stretched, the expander is removed and the implant is put in place recreating the breast.
