Scar Revision

Scars, whether caused by injury or surgery, can be a source of self consciousness or even physical discomfort. Scar revision can involve both topical and injectable treatments as well as surface treatments. Sometimes surgery may be used in order to remove or reposition a scar.

Advanced techniques can include flap closure and tissue expansion which can be used instead of skin grafts. With a skin graft, healthy tissue is removed from another part of the body to replace skin that is removed. With tissue expansion, a balloon is inserted under the skin near the scar site. The balloon is gradually filled with a sterile solution causing skin to expand. After skin has grown, the expander is removed and the scar is cut out. The new, healthy tissue is then extended to replace the removed scar tissue.
