Face
Throughout our lives, many things affect how we feel about our faces. When we are younger, we may be self-conscious about the shape or proportion of our ears or nose. As we age, those concerns give way to the visible signs of aging. Sun damage, environmental factors, and the loss of elasticity as we age all change the contours of our face and its smoothness and lead to the development of furrows, wrinkles, loss of volume, and other changes we’d like to erase for a more youthful appearance. Skin cancer can have a profound impact on our confidence, as can trauma to the face, or scars that have not healed the way we would have liked. At Plastic Surgery Associates of New Jersey, we can help you obtain the results you are looking for and will work closely with you to help you find the best approach to retain or regain confidence in your appearance.
Facelift
A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, can be used to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck and address sagging in the mid-face, jowls and neck. In addition, facelifts address deep creases below the lower eyelids and along the nose to the corner of the mouth, excess skin and deposits of fat under the chin and jaw area, loss of muscle tone in the lower face, and fat that has been displaced under the skin. Complementary procedures are often used to more effectively target improvements in the appearance of specific parts of the neck, brow, forehead or eyelids.
Brow/Forehead Lift
This may be right for you if you have visible signs of aging in the brow and forehead region of your face. Brow or forehead lifts can address lines and deep grooves between your brows or on your forehead. This procedure can also be used to lift brows that are "hooding" the eyelid, or have descended and are malpositioned. These procedures can be performed endoscopically and conventionally.
Endoscopic Facelift
An endoscopic facelift is a minimally invasive approach that utilizes an endoscope, which is a small probe that has a camera attached to it. The images transmitted by the camera allow the surgeon to see and navigate the internal structures underneath the skin. The benefits of a minimally invasive procedures like include faster recovery and less bleeding, bruising, and swelling than the traditional facelift. Many types of facelifts can be performed endoscopically.
Midface Facelift
A mid-face facelift specifically improves "laugh lines" and lifts cheeks where elasticity has decreased and sagging has occurred. Traditionally, the procedure involves repositioning the fatty layer over your cheekbones through incisions in the hairline and inside the mouth. Mid-face facelifts can be performed endoscopically or through the lower eyelid.
Neck Lift
As you age, you may notice a banding on your neck. A neck lift can address this by removing excess fat or tightening the muscles in your neck. Neck lifts can include three different steps: liposuction to remove fat, cervicoplasty to remove excess skin, and/or plastysmaplasty to tighten the neck muscles. A neck lift may be performed traditionally or using an endoscope, a device that includes a small camera that transmits images from under your skin to help guide the surgeon through the process. Endoscopic approaches are minimally invasive, which generally means a shorter recovery with less bleeding, swelling and bruising.
Eyelid Surgery
Also called blepharoplasty, cosmetic eyelid surgery can address sagging and loose or excess skin around the eyes, both on the upper and lower eyelids. During the procedure, excess skin or fat and muscle may be removed. Eyelid surgery may be right for you if you have under-eye circles, puffiness due to excess fatty deposits in the eyelids, droopiness of skin under the eye, and fine lines at the outer edges of the eye. Eyelid surgery is also used to treat a medical condition called ptosis (drooping eyelids).
Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
Rhinoplasty is performed for a variety of reasons. It can be done to improve the appearance of the nose due to prior injury or surgery. It also is used to alter the proportion, profile, size, tip or width of a person's nose in order to improve symmetry and confidence. Rhinoplasty can also help address structural defects that cause difficulty breathing.
Fat Transfer
This technique can be used in both the reconstructive and cosmetic procedures to change the appearance of the body. Fat is removed from one region of the body and transplanted to another to add volume and smooth skin, reduce wrinkles, augment soft tissues in the face and body, and treat areas that have been injured by trauma, cancer, or surgery. This technique is minimally invasive but may require multiple treatments.
Scar Revision
Scars, whether caused by injury or surgery, can be a source of self-consciousness or even physical discomfort. Scar revision can involve both topical and injectable treatments as well as surface treatments. Sometimes surgery may necessary to remove or reposition a scar.
Advanced techniques can include flap closure and tissue expansion, which can be used instead of skin grafts. With a skin graft, healthy tissue is takend from another part of the body to replace skin that has been removed. With tissue expansion, a balloon is inserted under the skin near the scar site. The balloon is gradually filled with a sterile solution that causes the skin to expand. After skin has grown, the expander is removed and the scar is cut out. The new, healthy tissue is then extended to replace the removed scar tissue.
Skin Cancer
When dealing with skin cancer, a plastic surgeon can help reduce the impact of cancerous cell removal by minimizing scarring or preventing the distortion of features such as the nose, or eyelids. At Plastic Surgery Associates of New Jersey, we perform the removal of the cancerous cells or work with your dermatologist to complete the suturing or reconstructive aspects after the removal of impacted tissue. The techniques vary depending on the size of the area that needs to be removed in order to create clean margins (where there are no remaining cancer cells). Sometimes an advanced flap technique or skin graft may be used. A local flap involves repositioning nearby skin so that it covers the wound. Skin grafts involve the relocation of healthy skin from another part of the body.
